In accordance with the protocol “Neurophysiological study of fMRI - EEG of the structure of meditation”, concluded between the Federal Research Center for Basic and Translational Medicine (FIC FTM) and the Save Tibet Foundation *, 14 – 16 March 2024 The first studies in world neurophysiological practice of the mechanisms of meditation were held in Novosibirsk with the participation of three masters - Tibetan monks, capable of manipulating the levels of their own consciousness, practitioners of tantric meditation. Purpose of this study – using fMRI technology to study brain states to provide a basis, on which future interdisciplinary studies of the phenomena of arbitrary modeling of plastic rearrangements in brain structures can be built, including for the purposes of medical rehabilitation. The study was conducted with the participation of tantric monks - a specific group of meditators, with unique deep diving skills, unique to them. The fMRI created at the ITC SB RAS and the Federal Research Center for Physics and Technology was used for the first time – EEG platform, built into a feedback loop and providing simultaneous monitoring of electrogenesis and the dynamics of oxygenation of the same brain area. Three successive stages were carried out at the site of the FRC FTM and the International Tomographic Center of the SB RAS: continuous recording of EEG in a tomograph model (14 March) and two (15 – 16 March) in a bimodal fMRI – EEG platform, built into the interactive loop: from the beginning of meditation to its end and exit from this state according to a signal from the meditator located in the tomograph. The project was initiated by the FRC FTM and is carried out jointly with the ITC SB RAS and Moscow State University.
