Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine" (FIC FTM) created in 2018 year on the basis of the order of the FASO of Russia dated 18.10.2016 G. № 501 "On the reorganization of the Federal State Budget Scientific Institution "Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine" in the form of joining the Federal State Budget Scientific Institution "Research Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics", Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Scientific Research Institute of Biochemistry", Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Institute of Molecular Pathology and Pathomorphology".

FRC FTM is the assignee of the first academic scientific medical and biological institute, created in Novosibirsk in the structure of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (further SF AMS USSR) in 1970 year - Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (more IKEM). AT 2020 year IKEM - FIC FTM turned 50 years.

The need to create an academic medical and biological institute IKEM in Novosibirsk was dictated by the, that in the sixties of the 20th century, the development of new technologies and the formation of large territorial-industrial complexes in Siberia and the East of the country posed many medical and biological problems in studying the interaction of the human body with a large complex of production and environmental factors. Decreased incidence, effective prevention, the preservation and development of human health required the creation of a genuine "health industry" based on a deep study of molecular biological, physical and chemical, immunological and other patterns of human life. By the decision of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the order of the Minister of Health No. 545 from 10 August 1970. in Novosibirsk was organized by the Federation Council of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences and IKEM. The initiator of organizing a branch in Siberia became the first chairman of the branch and director of IKEM, at that time the rector of the Novosibirsk Medical Institute, Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences V.P.. Treasurer.

The following main directions of scientific activity were determined for the new academic institute: study of physiological, biological and immunological changes in the human body in the process of adaptation; development of systems for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic diseases of various body systems, arising in the process of adaptation. AT 1972 IKEM was approved by the head institution on the problem of federal significance "Physiology and pathology of human adaptation mechanisms in various climatic, geographical and industrial regions of Siberia, Far East and Far North".

A team of IKEM scientists developed a targeted comprehensive interregional program "Human Adaptation", in the development of this direction, the program "Northern House" was developed, as a new section in the global human ecology, aimed at solving the main medical and biological problems of preserving and developing the health of indigenous and alien populations in the conditions of modern development of the Far North. During these years, IKEM scientists discovered a new biological phenomenon, dubbed "Polar Tension Syndrome", as a special form of adaptive chronic stress of the body, which is based on a whole range of subcellular, cellular and organismal changes, observed under the complex impact on humans of environmental factors of high latitudes. This syndrome manifests itself as a complex of general pathological systemic syndromes and is characterized by a tendency to a sluggish chronic course of diseases., insufficiency of repair processes and a tendency to sclerogenic reactions.

In the future, the phenomena of the “northern cell” were described in more detail., "heliogeophysical imprinting", "intracellular oxidative stress", "hypoxic fetal syndrome", syndrome of regenerative plastic insufficiency, mechanisms of formation of disadaptive states in various functional systems of the body, the phenomenon of switching energy metabolism from carbohydrate type to lipid type, psycho-emotional stress syndrome, "polar metabolic type", etc..

IKEM employees were active participants in many all-Union, Russian and international conferences and symposiums. Major events in the life of scientists were the holding in Novosibirsk in 1978 year on the basis of IKEM International Symposium on Polar Medicine, in which more than 100 foreign specialists, all-union conferences “Immunology of reproduction” (1980 G), “Cytochrome P-450 and environmental protection” (1987 G ) with the participation of foreign scientists.

Participation of IKEM in the CINDI/WHO International Program provided an opportunity to compare data on the health status of the population of Yakutia and other countries, and the territory of the Mirninsky ulus turned out to be a promising platform for the development of a global system for assessing and predicting the health status and dynamics of northern populations. Using probabilistic modeling, an integral assessment of the complex influence of risk factors on the occurrence and development of chronic pathology in the conditions of the North was carried out..

Employees of the Institute participated in the Soviet Antarctic expeditions at the Vostok stations, "Peaceful", "Youth", "Novolazarevskaya". В период 30-й экспедиции (1984-1986) a joint Soviet-Indian research program was carried out at the Antarctic station "Dakshin Gangotri".

As part of the implementation of the Intergovernmental Soviet-Indian Program, fundamental ideas about the mechanisms of adaptation and re-adaptation of the inhabitants of the tropics in the northern regions of Russia were expanded.

IKEM scientists in different years participated in the implementation of sections in the following programs: SSTP "Health of the population of Russia", SSTP "Integrated research of oceans and seas of the Arctic and Antarctic", direction 5 "Arctic", SSTP "National priorities in medicine and healthcare", RSTP "Siberia", regional program "Life cycle, quality of life and health of the population of the Novosibirsk region". Employees of IKEM participated in the implementation of the Interdepartmental Program "Sun-Climate-Man"; on the basis of global synchronous experiments on solar-biospheric relationships of the 11-year solar cycle, the concept of electromagnetic homeostasis of a biological system was formulated. In order to identify the characteristics of the body's response, determined by the heliogeophysical medium, by program “GLOBEX-85” for the first time in the country, synchronous (according to astronomical time) monitoring the level of magnetotropic reactions in patients with arterial hypertension in various climatic and geographical conditions. A major event was the implementation of a comprehensive scientific and practical program for the preservation and development of public health - the "Five Years of Health", launched in 1976 G. in Norilsk.

To strengthen scientific and medical activities in 1982 year, a clinic began to operate at IKEM at 200 beds. The main scientific task of clinical scientists and practitioners is to study the pathogenesis of chronic non-communicable and some infectious diseases from the standpoint of their environmental conditionality.. While maintaining and developing a systematic approach, profiling of specialized departments and services is carried out, equipping them with modern technology and equipment, which allows to conduct scientific research and provide highly qualified assistance to the inhabitants of Siberia and the North.

IKEM was organizationally created as an institution of interdisciplinary, very complex structure, able to form ready-made teams, in the future capable of creating large specialized research institutes. AT 1981 In 1999, on the basis of one of the departments of IKEM, the Research Institute of Clinical Immunology was formed (later Research Institute of Fundamental and Clinical Immunology), in 1988 year – Research Institute of Biochemistry. AT 1992 IKEM was reorganized into the Research Institute of General Pathology and Human Ecology with the separation of three independent institutes from its structure: Research Institute of Regional Pathology and Pathological Morphology, Research Institute of Molecular and Ecological Pathology and Research Institute of Medical and Biological Cybernetics; the last two in 1998 merged into the Research Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics. AT 1998 in the process of reorganization on the basis of the Research Institute of General Pathology and Human Ecology, the Scientific Center for Clinical and Experimental Medicine was created (later Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine).

For 50 years of activity IKEM - FITs FTM it was headed by Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, MD, professor V.P. Treasurer; corresponding member of RAMS, MD, professor V.N. Denisov V.N.; Honored Worker of Science of the Russian Federation, Academician RAN, MD, Professor V.A. Shelly; Honored Worker of Science of the Russian Federation, d.b.n., Professor A.M. Shestopalov; from February 2019 G. FTC FTM is currently headed by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, MD, professor, Honored Scientist of the NSO M.I.. Governor.

During the activity of IKEM-FITs FTM, its employees have published more than 8 thousand scientific papers, including over 200 monographs; done over 5 thousand reports at congresses, symposia, conferences of all-Russian and world level, over 500 doctors and candidates of sciences, 13 people became corresponding members and academicians of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences; more than 150 patents, developed and implemented over 250 guidelines, information letters, new medical diagnostic technologies, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of patients with chronic non-communicable diseases.

Consolidation of four research institutes in the FIC FTM structure, previously former structural divisions of IKEM, having significant scientific achievements in the complementary fields of life sciences and clinical medicine, and having a wide range of scientific competencies, in one federal research center has now made it possible to formulate a qualitatively new and wider range of scientific tasks for solving scientific problems, increase the "depth" and increase the complexity of their study, accelerate not only the acquisition of world-class fundamental knowledge about the pathogenesis of a number of socially significant and other diseases, pathological conditions, but also to get a real opportunity as an end result to plan the creation, production and market launch of new diagnostic tools, prevention and drug treatment, new treatment technologies and their translation into the FITs FTM clinic and other medical institutions.
