AT 2013 year on the basis of the Scientific Center of Cynic and Experimental Medicine (NC KEM, later renamed FITs FTM) the Laboratory for Experimental Modeling and Pathogenesis of Infectious Diseases was organized. The main staff of the laboratory was made up of scientists, transferred from the State Scientific Center of Virology and Biotechnology "Vector". The laboratory has gradually expanded, attracted new young cadres, which made it possible to first transform the laboratory into a department, and then in 2021 to allocate to a separate Institute (Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia No. 145 dated 2 March 2021 G. on inclusion in the FRC FTM of the Eurasian Institute of Zoonotic Infections (Eizi); Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia No. 775 dated 23 August 2021 G. on renaming the UISI into the Research Institute of Virology (Research Institute of Virology)).

The creation of the Research Institute of Virology made it possible to significantly expand work on the study of the molecular and cellular basis of the pathogenesis of new and most common infectious diseases of viral etiology in Siberia in order to develop means for their specific and nonspecific prevention..

In connection with the emergence of foci of new viral and bacterial infections in the world and the growing risk of introducing these pathogens into Russia, there is an urgent need for scientific research to control and identify new pathogens., on the development of modern means of prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Since its founding, the Research Institute of Virology has been headed by the Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Shestopalov Alexander Mikhailovich.
